EJ571 – 2nd Line Support Engineer

Location:  Broadstairs, Kent 

Salary:  £30,000 – £35,000 

Overview:

First Military Recruitment are currently recruiting for a 2nd Line Support Engineer to join one of our clients. This varied role will suit an individual with a competent and wide-ranging understanding of IT. Although the successful applicant should have a degree of technical skills, particularly in Microsoft SQL server, the ability to effectively communicate and direct third party specialists across the full scope of IT disciplines is a key requirement of this role. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Management of third party suppliers and contracts to support the company’s network infrastructure and VoIP services within a Microsoft environment (Windows 7 /Server 2008, RDS, Exchange, IPVPN, AVAYA IP Office).
  • Oversee troubleshooting, systems backups, security, archiving, and disaster recovery. 
  • Ensuring the effective running of the in-house helpdesk so that faults and change requests are prioritised and resolved in a suitable timeframe. You will be required to assist with general support tasks as needs dictate. 
  • Interact with internal staff at all levels to help resolve IT-related issues and provide guidance on IT strategy at board level. 
  • Build and maintain vendor relationships and manage the purchase/lease of hardware and software products, ensuring IT assets are managed appropriately. 
  • Maintaining and supporting the company’s business critical Microsoft SQL databases and line of business applications. This includes general support and administration tasks, writing ad-hoc scripts for reporting purposes or bulk updates of data. 
  • Overseeing the on-going development of the company’s bespoke line of business applications.
  • Create and maintain documentation of the IT infrastructure and related company policies.
  • Develop requirements, outlines, budgets and schedules for IT projects, and manage these throughout the entire lifecycle.  

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Atop-level understanding of network fundamentals and related technologies (e.g. switches, Active Directory, DHHCP, Remote Desktop Services etc.)
  • Competence in common business platforms and software in order to support end users- including, but not limited to, Microsoft Windows 7, iOS and Microsoft Office. 
  • A top-level understanding of VoIP systems. Experience with Avaya IP Office would be advantageous. 
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server – being able to write T-SQL and administer a SQL Server.
  • Experience using a data reporting tool such as Crystal Reports. 
  • Experience working with third party suppliers and managing contracts and SLAs. 
  • Management, decision making and supervisory skills. 
  • Analytical and problem solving skills. 
  • Being an effective communicator, both verbal and written.
